The Next Big Chemistry Challenge

In the process of doing some file cleaning, I came across a question that I had set aside.  In light of the recent Supreme Court announcement concerning pollution and issues related to hydraulic fracturing (“fracking”), I thought it might be a good time to post it again.

In your opinion, what is the biggest chemical challenge facing this society in the coming ten years? Why?

  1. Supplying clean potable water along with water that does not have toxic chemicals in it so that the water can be used for irrigation. Over 30 years ago the manager of the electric and water supply system in the town where I lived in northern Iowa did a presentation to my Physics class. He said at that time the potable water would be one of the biggest humanity would face in the future, even more so than energy.
